Having 24 editions of an Award, as the IAP Social Foundation does, is a source of pride for an institution.Its continuity and the seriousness with which the selection process is carried out have given these awards great prestige. Without a doubt, we can affirm that they are one of the most important recognitions at the national level given by a non-profit civil society organization. Next Tuesday, September 25, that association will present the “Sharing Awards” at the Teatro de los Insurgentes in Mexico City. There are a total of 5 recognitions that will be granted and received: 1) Institution Award, Fraternidad Sin Fronteras IAP Foundation; 2) Social Leader Award, Juana Cruz Jiménez; 3) Award for the Institution in Social Development, Cáritas de San Cristóbal de las Casas; 4) Educational Institution Award, Ahome Pro-Education Board and 5) Volunteer Award, María Elena Romero Castellanos. We say that the selection process is one of the most serious and professional where the assignment of a prize without firm bases is not possible, nor is it given due to personal sympathies or preferences. Several years ago I worked as a member of the pre-jury so I can support what I state here.

According to information provided by Share Social Foundation, María Elena was born in 1974. She studied industrial chemistry and is also a nurse. Her volunteer work began when she was 11 years old.
Since then her activity has not ceased. She directs the Sick Anonymous association, Tree House of Life, from where they care for terminally ill, terminally ill and chronically ill patients, in situations of poverty and abandonment by their families. That institution was founded by her father, José Leonardo Castellanos. Her beneficiaries affectionately call her “Godmother” and say that she is an enthusiastic activist in mobilizing resources with various activities to support the House. Right now she is working on a no less ambitious and transcendent project since she has planned to create a headquarters that will allow her to have better facilities to care for the sick.
