Por ELLEN KNICKMEYER y LINLEY SANDERS (Associated Press) WASHINGTON (AP) — Half of American adults say Israel's 15-week military campaign in Gaza has “gone too far,” a conclusion driven largely by growing disapproval among Republicans and political independents, according to a new poll from The Associated Press. NORC Center for Public Affairs Research. Overall, the poll shows that support for Israel and the Biden administration's handling of the situation is declining slightly across the board. The poll shows that 31% of American adults approve of Biden's handling of the conflict, including only 46% of Democrats. This is because support for Israel after the Hamas attacks of October 7 decreases. Melissa Morales, a 36-year-old independent politician from Runnemede, New Jersey, says she finds herself watching videos and news from Gaza every day. The images of Palestinian children injured, orphaned or made homeless by the fighting in Gaza make her think of her own 3-year-old son.

I just can't imagine my son wandering the streets, wanting to be safe. Loving his mother. Or just wanting someone to catch it,” she said. Israel's offensive has gone too far, Morales says, as has the Biden administration's support. Biden has supported Israel militarily and diplomatically since the early hours after the Hamas America Mobile Number List group's Oct. 7 attacks, which Israel says killed 1,200 people. Hamas has been designated a terrorist organization by the United States, Canada and the European Union. The United States has become increasingly isolated in its support for Israel as the Palestinian death toll surpasses 27,000, two-thirds of whom are women and children. The Biden administration says it is pressuring Israel to reduce killings of civilians and allow in more humanitarian aid. “These kids… need an end to this,” Morales said. "It's such an unfair fight." John Milor, a cybersecurity expert from Clovis, California, who describes himself as an independent who votes Republican, says he remains “100%” behind Israel. But Milor notices that more young people in his circle are speaking out against Israel.

A visit to a family friend left Milor horrified when the man's stepson denounced the Israelis as "warmongers." "And I said, 'You're kidding, right?'" Milor said. "It's not like they're asking to be attacked, you know," Milor said by phone this week. "And they still have hostages there." The poll shows that 33% of Republicans now say Israel's military response has gone too far, up from 18% in November. Fifty-two percent of independents say that, up from 39%. Sixty-two percent of Democrats say they feel that way, about the same majority as in November. In all, 50% of American adults now believe that Israel's military offensive has gone further than it should have, according to the survey. That's an increase from 40% in an AP-NORC poll conducted in November. The new survey was conducted from January 25 to 28. This coincided with the killing of three American soldiers in Jordan, the first deaths among American service members in what has been widening regional conflict since October 7. US officials blamed a drone attack by a Hamas-allied militia. The new poll's findings include more troubling news for President Joe Biden when it comes to support from his own political party.
