That the strategy of electric vehicle manufacturers is turning towards previously unimaginable industries - such as mining - is not surprising. The proposed objectives regarding electrification cannot be met if they do not have the necessary raw materials for the batteries that power them. And they're not exactly going well. A new study by the pressure group Transport & Environment (T&E) analyzes the situation of the main manufacturers and only two are doing enough to guarantee the supply of cobalt, lithium and nickel to meet their sales targets for 2030. The objectives do not correspond to reality: there are not enough raw materials The analysis, based on published supplier contracts, reveals that carmakers in the European market have secured less than a fifth (16%) of the key battery metals they will need until 2030 .

To give us an idea, in each electric car there is an average of 6 kilos of lithium, 10 kg of cobalt and another 10 kg of manganese, not to mention another material that is used massively in batteries, and that Europe does not have either: graphite. (there is an average of 52 kg in each battery). This brand does not "sell" cars. And yet its only model is a Cell Phone Number List bestseller IN MOTORPASIÓN This brand does not "sell" cars. And yet its only model is a bestseller In this context, according to the International Energy Agency, global demand for lithium in 2022 skyrocketed to reach no more and no less than 134,000 tons, but by 2030, Europe alone will need up to 18 times more lithium than is currently used. , and by 2050, almost 60 times more. Only Tesla and BYD manage to not be left behind in this race, while in the European market we are far behind, with some exceptions. The analysis is part of a ranking by T&E of manufacturers in the battery supply chain based on secured raw materials, cell production and responsible practices.

In this ranking, Tesla leads the overall ranking "for the strength of its raw material and cell production strategies," although it is behind several competitors in responsible practices . For its part, Volkswagen performs relatively well in all three categories and finishes second, just ahead of the Chinese giant BYD, which tops the raw materials score but does not comply with responsible practices because it does not provide information on sustainable sourcing. According to this analysis, only Tesla, BYD, VW, Ford, Renault and Stellantis have long-term contracts for each of the three key metals or plan to change battery chemistry to end their dependence on one of the materials. cousins. Mercedes-Benz has only one publicly disclosed contract for one key mineral, while BMW, which opposes the phase-out of combustion engines in the EU, has not revealed enough information about how it plans to source nickel, cobalt or cathode materials. However, it is not all bad news for European manufacturers.
